Accountant

Job Purpose

Our client, a full-service service law firm in Nairobi which focuses on corporate law, commercial law, conveyancing, banking law, real estate law, civil litigation and arbitration is looking for an Accountant to join their team.
The Accountant shall report to the Managing Partner and have the overall responsibility of carrying out accounting and finance duties in the company.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. Assume overall responsibilities and leadership of the Accounts Department by managing all accounting transactions
  2. Prepare annual budgets and budget forecasts; track budgets
  3. Prepare and issue routine financial reports; hold periodic meetings with the Managing Partner to discuss the financial reports and implement action points emanating from the meetings
  4. Prepare financial statements
  5. Prepare books of accounts
  6. Taxation: File all the relevant taxes that pertain to the law firm i.e. PAYE, VAT,& income tax, be familiar with the tax laws of Kenya, The Tax Procedures Act & iTax, and make visits to KRA to follow up on any emerging issues.
  7. Prepare payroll and file statutory deductions such as NHIF, NSSF & PAYE
  8. Compute taxes and prepare tax returns
  9. Preparing monthly statements of financial performance and going through sales, cost of sales, expense, supplier and customer entries
  10. Perform reconciliations: monthly bank, payroll, client accounts, supplier accounts and any other reconciliations as required by the company. Reconcile accounts payable and receivables and compare the general ledger against bank statements to ensure that they are in agreement
  11. Prepare customer statements reconciliation and share the statements with clients every 5th of the month; prepare monthly reports on the file and respective transactions
  12. Manage creditors: negotiate credit terms, enforce agreed credit periods
  13. Manage debtors: Collect all accounts receivable, update the system, and escalate problematic debtors to the Managing Partner
  14. Cash flow management – ensure cash is available when needed and raise bank requisitions on any large payments done via the bank
  15. Track the disbursements on clients’ files to determine the amounts on each file for both litigation and conveyance
  16. Review, post and verify all transactions posted in the accounting system
  17. Handle monthly, quarterly and annual closing
  18. Manage balance sheets and profit and loss statements
  19. Report and manage the law firm’s exposure and financial liquidity
  20. Liaise with external auditors to ensure proper auditing of financial transactions and documents
  21. Reinforce financial data confidentiality and conduct database backups when necessary
  22. Comply with financial policies and regulations

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Commerce (B.Com) with Financial Management/Accounting options Degree.
  • At least 2 years experience as an Accountant in a busy commercial environment
  • CPA-K.
  • Familiar with using QuickBooks.
  • Excellent numerical and analytical abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be able to deliver under strict deadlines, have self-drive and work without much supervision.
